why we celebrate Thanksgiving day?
Thanksgiving has come to know us as an opportunity to express our appreciation for the abundance of our lives, whether it's the excellent relationships we have with our friends and families, our opportunities, our health — or stuffing ourselves with mashed potatoes. But the past of the holiday is a little more complicated than just a commemoration of the appreciation that we should share more than one day of the year of our lives. Thanksgiving's story, as it happens, has many layers including spectacle, entrepreneurial spirit, and economic recovery— and, of course, feasting.
If it weren't for this committed girl, there wouldn't be Thanksgiving today. Hale's loyalty to Thanksgiving began in 1827 and was founded in national pride; she hoped to make it "permanently, an American norm and institution." It wasn't until 1863 that President Lincoln finally declared Thanksgiving a national vacation. Seeing as the President did this in the midst of the Civil War, thanksgiving is viewed by some as an attempt to bring some goodwill back to the country on behalf of the president.
